For different device-based actions within HsM (especially for the registration of devices) the device in question has to be identified first. Device identification is needed to unambiguously match the physical device to its digital twin.
Generally a device is identified via one of its components. When provided with identifying characteristics of a component, HsM can query the Digital Twin Service to get the device that this component belongs to.
As components (e.g. spare parts) may not be installed within a device, not every component identifies a device.
On the API level devices can be identified with the unique digital twin device id.
If the identified component belongs to a device that is the compound member of a compound device then the component identifies the compound device.
Device systems can be identified via a component in one of its member devices.
